YOGA with Jess
To me, yoga is one of the most beautiful tools to help us live an embodied life.
What does that mean?
To be embodied means to be able to bring the physical, emotional and mental experience that makes "us" together. In our fragmented world, this is not always an easy thing to attain.
Think about it this way: A lot of us go through life with a clear-cut separation between "work" and "life," right? One usually being more enjoyable than the other - and life usually ending up having to wait, or being the thing that we look forward to when work is done. That used to be me, anyways - you might find other examples.
In yoga, we practice bringing all these aspects together, always. We move our body as we observe the mind, and feel the emotions that come forward in the practice.
My way of practicing and teaching yoga is deeply inspired by the way I was taught at Yasodhara Ashram, in beautiful Kootenay Bay, Canada. It's a gentle version of Hatha Yoga, and while there are aspects of each class that engage the body in a more active way, my focus is on breathing, on relaxation, and on spaciousness to go inward, and listen what your body has to tell you.
HIDDEN LANGUAGE HATHA YOGA
This adaptation of Hatha Yoga was developed by the founder of Yasodhara Ashram, Swami Sivananda Radha, who was inspired by her guru Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh to deepen the practice of Hatha Yoga by incorporating the asking of questions and written reflection.
Going into the poses observing the body and the mind, as well as the emotions that come forward as we set the intention to bring in these questions that open us up to new layers of meaning not just of the asanas (poses), but of ourselves has brought so much richness to my practice that this is now one of my favorite ways to share yoga.
In the class, we use our own intuition in reflecting on and exploring the poses, as well as questions and inspirations from Swami Radha's and Swami Lalitananda's books. You're invited to journal, draw, write poems... whatever comes forward. There is no limit to where your journey inward will take you.
I've found the ideal length for a Hidden Language class to be 1.5 hours, but shorter classes are also possible, and can be a beautiful introduction to Hidden Language Hatha Yoga.
EMOTIONAL Celebration YOGA
Pairing my learnings with my passion to create safe spaces for emotional expression, this practice is aiming at allowing practitioners to truly open up, using their asana practice to access any and all emotions that are alive in their body - knowing that they're held and witnessed, without judgement, in that expression.
Throughout my own journey with inner work, I've experienced again and again how important it is to be able to not just express my feelings, but to be seen in that expression - how much more healing can come from that "other", the outside perspective. As one of my teachers and the founder of the Triple Vagal Method, Maj Zachari, says: "We're nothing without a viewer."
And so, in this practice, I'm offering guidance through yoga poses and movements that support you in accessing, expressing and releasing difficult emotions whilst being viewed by a neutral, caring other - and celebrating you in that process.
To me, being allowed to witness another's process is the most beautiful gift, and a truly humbling experience. Thank you for your trust, and your courage.
