WHY MOMO?

There's a beautiful story about a little girl that lives in the ruins of an old colosseum outside a small town. Apart from the fact that no-one knows where she came from, and that she doesn't seem to belong to anyone, her most striking feature is that she has an amazing ability to listen.

"She could listen in a way that confused and wavering people suddenly knew precisely what they wanted. Or so that shy ones suddenly felt free and brave. Unhappy and depressed ones would suddenly become confident and joyful. And when someone thought that his life was all amiss and insignificant, that he himself was merely one among millions, totally unimportant and replaceable like a broken dish, – when such a one went and told all this to little Momo, it happened that while he was still speaking he realized in some mysterious way clearly that he was mistaken: there was, in fact, no one quite like him among all other human beings; he was unique, and therefore in a special way important for the world. And all this came from the way Momo was able to listen." (Michael Ende)

This quality of Momo's has always inspired me, and it's something that I incorporate in my practice more and more, as well as my life, as I continue to learn about the incredible human body, mind and soul.

My journey on this path probably started much earlier than I'm even aware of, but on a more conscious, intentional level in 2015, when I attended - or stumbled into, rather - a Vipassana retreat in the mountains of northern British Columbia, Canada, where I had just moved after roaming my home country, Germany, and other parts of the world - ever searching for this place to call home, and people who would support that vision.

What started as a happenstance visit to the land of meditation and yoga became a lifestyle when I moved to Yasodhara Ashram in the East Kootenays, where I ended up spending 3.5 years after completing a 3-month personal development course, followed by a Hatha Teacher Training. I worked and lived in the community, learned about spirituality in general and yoga in particular, and slowly but surely came to understand: Home isn't without, it's within - and I'll always be on a journey of defining what that means.

My journey then took me to Mexico, where - again, almost coincidentally, although I really don't believe in coincidences anymore at this point - stumbled upon a beautiful somatic healing method called TVM (Triple Vagal Method). Up until then, my only work in the field of the body had been in teaching Hatha Yoga, but the fire was stoked, and I took or participated in five trainings over a course of 6 months - and I'm only getting started.

Being a continuous learner is another feature of mine that I'm starting to appreciate more and more, and am really learning to be excited about: The prospect that I'll never be "done," that there's always more to explore.

So be prepared to see this space, and my offerings, keep expanding as I grow - and of course, feel free to come along on the journey with me! I would be honored to share a part of my path with you, and to become part of yours.

Jess was born in 1985 in Eastern Germany - just a few years before the wall came down. She's lived in various places first in her home country, before the travel bug bit. She was fortunate to be able to visit Australia and New Zealand, before moving to Canada in 2015, where she's lived for 9 years, and is now a permanent resident.

Most recently, she was able to travel to Mexico and Central America, learning about different healing techniques and cultures, and discovering her own unique flavor of somatic healing - discovering her voice, so to speak.

Music has always been a part of Jess' life, and she loves to write - songs, poems, stories, you name it. She also loves to talk with, and listen to people - to witness their stories, and their experiences through them.

Jess has found her purpose in helping others to heal, just as she is finding healing through others. Realizing that this work is not a one-way street: It's a wave; an underlying cyclical motion that creates new shapes, new potentials, new developments with every single move.

This work is her path, and she's excited to invite you along on the journey when and for however long it calls to you. Welcome to MOMO Somatics!
